Most Reels are decided in their first few seconds. Viewers decide with their thumb, and you get one chance to keep them. The good news: editing, not expensive gear, does most of the work in that decision.

In this guide we go through everything a professional editor does to make a Reel work, in order. If you'd rather have it done automatically, the Cinematic Noir style was built for exactly this.

1. The first three seconds: lead with the hook#

A hook is a line or image that creates curiosity. The most common mistake is opening with a greeting and an introduction. Instead, move the most compelling moment to the very start, then go back.

  • Open with a question or a surprising claim.
  • If the end result is visual (before/after, finished product), show it first.
  • Have on-screen text in the first second — many people start Reels muted.

2. Cut rhythm: every pause is a chance to leave#

Reels move faster than YouTube. Cut pauses, filler words and repeated sentences. Simple rule: if a moment adds no new information or feeling, it doesn't belong in the final edit.

Jump cuts — with intent#

Jump cuts are accepted in Reels, but back-to-back and unmotivated they tire the eye. Change the framing slightly between cuts (a gentle punch-in) to keep the image alive.

Cut on the beat#

When cuts land on the music's beat, a video feels professional even if viewers can't say why. It's one of the things the Vidico engine does automatically.

3. Captions: legible, bold and short#

Captions aren't just for accessibility; they're a retention tool. Good Reels captions have three qualities:

  1. Bold and high-contrast: readable on any background.
  2. Short: one line, a few words at a time.
  3. In the safe zone: away from the bottom, where Instagram's buttons and caption sit.

4. Sound: viewers forgive picture, not audio#

Muffled or noisy audio is the fastest way to lose viewers. Reduce background noise, even out loudness and keep music under the voice. For better recordings, watch Shooting for the best result.

5. The right format and length#

Reels are vertical: 9:16 at 1080×1920. There's no fixed ideal length, but one rule always holds: the video should end exactly when its point does. If you also publish horizontally, see Exports for every platform.

Pre-publish checklist#

  • Do the first three seconds make sense with the sound off?
  • Is every unnecessary pause or repetition gone?
  • Are captions clear of Instagram's buttons?
  • Is loudness consistent across the video?
  • Does the cover have short, legible text?

Common questions#

What's the best length for a Reel?

There's no magic number. A video should be as long as its point; every extra second raises the chance a viewer leaves.

Do I need desktop software to edit Reels professionally?

No. With Vidico you choose a style and upload your raw video; cuts, colour, captions and music are done automatically.

Should I burn in captions or use Instagram's auto captions?

Burned-in captions give you full control over look and placement and appear the same on every platform.
